Crossing the Finish Line

We throw our arms in the air and celebrate when we finish a race, win a game, make a great play or have success. This is a natural human reaction that we see around the world. We celebrate achieving, attaining and realizing those things we were seeking.

For me most recently it was my first Fire Flow with the battle axe.

I was so excited when the prop arrived and couldn’t wait to flow with it, moving it, spinning it and connecting with the fire in that moment.

For more than a week the axe sat, bright and shinny, waiting and calling to me, yet I did not spin, always coming up with a logical reason why that night was not the night to do it.

Of course, spinning that first time with the battle axe was not the only thing in my life that remained started and yet to be finished.

There was quite a sizable “To Do” list that I carried around in my brain, was written down on a small white board in the kitchen, or on my actual, actual, this is really my to do list, notepad on my desk.

Each and every day, I wake up energized with the thought that today is the day that I will finish the list I have for today.

The next morning as I write that list over again (making myself pay a price by rewriting items that have not been completed), I again, think today is the day.

Does this or a version of this sound familiar for you?

Do you feel buried under a to do list that only seems to get longer day by day?

If you’re sitting there nodding your head in an affirmative and resounding “YES”, then you are not alone.

This is a common focal point that I have heard from most of my clients and it usually manifests as:

“I Don’t Have Time To…!”

Four ways to get control of your “To Do” list, silence the Tiger’s roar and live life every day

  1. Honest Acceptance

There is no one who reaches the summit of their life with everything on their list completed.

There will always be more that we want to do than there is time to do it.

  1. Clear out the Clutter

Do a “Brain Dump” as shared by Mel Robbins.

Write down everything that comes to mind, then intentionally cross it off until only one item remains.

  1. Embrace Becoming

Through Play, Work and Love we create our life.

Focus on including all three in what you are doing and embrace a focus on doing and growing.

  1. Tools & Techniques

There are countless tools out there to help with this.

Three that I use regularly to help me are:

  • E.A.S.E. Model – Created by Doug O’Brien this approach breaks down those insurmountable goals into success building levels that lead to accomplishment and fulfillment.

  • 4-Quadrants – Created by Steven Covey this approach helps to focus in on what truly requires your attention and effort. It is a way to take out the trash, so to speak, and remove items that simply should not be on your list.

  • Habits & Rituals – What you do to start and end your day that energizes you. For me one crucial ritual is NO screen time for the first 1-hour when I start my day.

Accomplishing the myriad of things that is on your “To Do” list is not about discipline, reward & punishment, or control.

It is about accepting that you are becoming a version of yourself each and every day.

In that process you will always find more that you want to do and at the same time you will be faced with the fear of “What’s next?” when you do finish a task or action.

That can all be a bit overwhelming.

That is where coaching comes in.

Not to give you a specific technique or tool that you must use (you can do that on your own using the internet).

Coaching is about having a trusted person who can shine a mirror on areas or approaches that may be in your blind spot.

If you’re tired of being overloaded and overwhelmed, buried under a list that feels insurmountable.

Then let’s have a conversation and I will walk with you, until you’re ready to walk on your own.

Until next time,

The Tiger Is Inside You.

Quote of The Week:

“What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.”
— Tim Ferriss

Have you ever noticed that voice that reverberates in your head the minute you consider a new experience or an action to make your dreams a reality? The one that seems to whisper “You’re not ready” or shouts “What if you fail?”

That is the Tiger that I refer to and the idea of creating the metaphor for the Tiger came from Jim Lawless in his book, Taming Tigers.

It’s fear and self-doubt dressed up as protection, convincing us to stay safe instead of stepping forward and growing. The Tiger is loud, convincing and relentless, but here’s the truth: it only has the power we give it.

Every time you step forward in spite of that roar, you weaken its grip and strengthen your own. That is what Tiger Letters are all about, sharing knowledge, experience, fears and inner strength to make your dreams a reality.

So, the next time your Tiger ROARS, smile at it, step forward reclaiming your power and break through the fear barrier into your growth zone.
