The Toe Stub That Took Over

I was talking with a friend the other day who had recently returned from a family vacation.

One day during that vacation, the family went and enjoyed an amazing day at Disney World which culminated in a spectacular fireworks show, with a display of bright lights in the sky accompanied by the booming sounds that preceded them.

It was a day filled with once-in-a-lifetime memories and a true sense of togetherness. My friend remarked that for him the true reward from the day was seeing the smiles on his family’s faces, hearing the laughter as they discussed a recent experience and feeling the closeness of hugs that were shared all around.

His expression though, did not match the memory of the day and the feelings which he was espousing. It was rather dour, and he appeared tense while relaying the events of what was an amazing day with his family.

When pressed about this incongruency between his physical expression and the words that were being shared to describe the day; my friend’s head dipped and he said, “It just didn’t end very well” On the way out of the park they headed to the trams that would drive them back to the lot where their car was parked, he had stumbled as he moved to avoid a person who had stopped suddenly in front of him to tie their shoe. In that process, he had stubbed his toe on the curb.

He shared that stubbing his toe became his primary memory from the day, and he watched as, on the way home, his happy and excited family became quiet and withdrawn as if all that they had done together that day had simply vanished.

Mindset vs. Emotion: What Drives You?

There is a saying I learned while going through some operational training several years ago.

“Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.”

In other words, ensure that you remain focused on the positive outcome you are working to attain and do not allow a singular event to be the sole determining factor as to whether or not something you did was a positive or negative experience.

I call this the Toe Stub Trap. When a single moment clouds the entire memory.

It comes down to Mindset or Emotions as your primary driver. If it is a mindset, you will remain in control and be able to cognitively process that event as a part of all events that make up the experience.

If it is emotions, you will likely only focus on that event, and, going back to the saying, you will be throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Reflection Prompt:

What recent experience have you dismissed too quickly because one part went wrong? What would shift if you zoomed out?

Quote of The Week:
