Standing at the Finish Line

Have you ever found yourself about to be the first person to finish something?

Like a test, a race, a contest or something similar.

Did you look around to see how everyone else was doing, trying to assess their progress?

This was a habit that I developed, especially when it came to taking tests/exams.

I would be done and sit for several minutes, worried about what others might think of me when I walked to the room to hand in my paper.

Would they feel bad because they were not as far along on their own test?

This habit, manifested and repeated itself many times over in my life thus far.

When I was studying Kung Fu, I would get concerned of what others would think or say if I moved up a level faster than they were able to move up.

In many areas of my life, I would hold back and delay completion or attainment of goals because of this concern.

In some cases, I remained silent, never sharing my accomplishment.

There are three things which affect our willingness to celebrate our own success.

In the wrong combination, these three things make us feel unsafe and instead of manifesting our dreams, we engage in limiting our success or worse, in self-sabotage to prevent ourselves from reaching that dream.

1. Belonging

In short, belonging is about feeling that you matter and that you are not alone.

This is realized through meaningful connection with others, acceptance, inclusion and support (knowing others care about you).

When we are out of sync with our need for belonging it affects our emotional security, personal identity and well-being.

2. Becoming

In short, becoming is about the process of becoming – not just who you are today.

This is realized through our growth, purpose, self-actualization and progress (not feeling stuck).

Being out of sync with our need for becoming affects our personal fulfillment, confidence and sense of purpose & direction.

3. Freedom

In short, freedom is about having ownership over your life.

This is realized through having control over your thoughts, choices, actions and direction (without unnecessary restriction).

At its core, freedom encompasses: Autonomy, Self-Expression, Self-Trust and Self-Determination.

Being out of sync with our drive for freedom affects our motivation, growth and well-being.

  • Where would you evaluate your current connection and satisfaction of the basic human needs for Belonging, Becoming and Freedom?

  • What would it mean to you to have more Belonging, Becoming and Freedom?

  • How would you move closer to manifesting your dreams with more Belonging, Becoming and Freedom?

As a coach, I work with clients utilizing a co-creative approach that focuses on these three basic human needs (and a few more) to establish the environment that leads to your realization of your dreams.

We work together as you align, rebuild and reenforce each of these basic needs.

In essence, I walk with you until you are ready to walk on your own.

Until next time,

The Tiger Is Inside You.

Quote of The Week:

Our Deepest Fear by Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

Have you ever noticed that voice that reverberates in your head the minute you consider a new experience or an action to make your dreams a reality? The one that seems to whisper “You’re not ready” or shouts “What if you fail?”

That is the Tiger that I refer to and the idea of creating the metaphor for the Tiger came from Jim Lawless in his book, Taming Tigers.

It’s fear and self-doubt dressed up as protection, convincing us to stay safe instead of stepping forward and growing. The Tiger is loud, convincing and relentless, but here’s the truth: it only has the power we give it.

Every time you step forward in spite of that roar, you weaken its grip and strengthen your own. That is what Tiger Letters are all about, sharing knowledge, experience, fears and inner strength to make your dreams a reality.

So, the next time your Tiger ROARS, smile at it, step forward reclaiming your power and break through the fear barrier into your growth zone.
